Day 1 ~ Why Clean? {31 Days to Clean}

Hey everyone!!! Welcome to the first day of 31 — days to clean! :)

To kick off Day 1, I want to share this hilarious video with you. Some of you may have remembered this from our first round of 31 Days to Clean. Now, it may not go perfectly with the aspect of cleaning. But, being a homemaker often involves being a mother, too. After all, we wouldn’t have all that extra cleaning without children. ;)

Tell me you can’t relate to some part of what she says here:

Humor is good medicine, no? :)

Choosing to become a wife and then a mom is a way of choosing to serve in a BIG way. Add multiple children & the amount of serving [in the home] increases. Cleaning house goes with the territory. Often, though, we tend to put precedence on cleaning, over everything else. Why is that?

It could be because it is something tangible and seen by anyone who comes through the door. We don’t want to live in dirty homes. But we tend to really put time and effort into cleaning our homes, for often, the wrong reasons.

What purpose does our clean home serve? For order and peace? Does it truly serve our family, or our own show and recognition? Is having a clean home a way for people to see how busy we are and what we’ve accomplished?

For me, having a clean home helps me breathe and focus. I don’t necessarily like people coming into a messy house either, honestly, because I get worried they might wonder what I do all day. As a homeschooling mom, cleaning has to take a back seat to homeschooling. However, I get caught in the middle of this simply because I homeschool better when the house is clean. When the house is a mess, so are my thoughts and I’m scattered. I feel unorganized and unprepared. I need the order in my home to function well.  Love is sown in seeds of service. I desire to serve well so that I might love well. I will admit, I get discouraged as I clean day after day and wake up day after day cleaning the same mess. It’s hard.

You can read my mission statement in it’s completion here: My Purpose As a Homemaker

Set aside some time today to do the Mary challenge and Martha challenge. Remember, these are integral to the change. Below I’ve listed some resources for you, for help and encouragement. :)

Please feel free to share in the comments. If you would like to post on your blog, please do! Fridays are link up days, so you may share your favorite 31 Days to Clean post there. You can post once a week, once a day or simply join us in the comments if you don’t have a blog. :)

Friends, when you write your posts, please be minimal in sharing directly from the book. Certainly share your experiences with us, but keep the challenges and bulk of the info a surprise. Please do not write the chapters word for word nor share all the challenges. :) We must remember, as with any book, it is copyrighted information. Thanks guys!

Tomorrow will be our first giveaway. So be sure to visit this blog to enter! We will have our first link up next Friday, September 9th.

Check out the all new 31 Days to Clean videos put out by contributor Jennifer Ross – they are located under the Reader Only Downloads.

Just joining us? We are going through Sarah Mae‘s 31 Days to Clean.. Feel free to jump in and purchase the book (PDF or Kindle) at any time!

  1. Is it possible to join the challenge without buying the book? I am not able to purchase it right now, but want to challenge myself to keep a “cleaner” home. I homeschool 4 of my 6 and need order also to keep going. Right now there is alot of change going on and order flew out the window. LOL

      Claire,
We will not be sharing the challenges or contents of the book on the blog here, so you won’t know what the challenges are unless you buy the book. The posts will simply be personal aspects of different women’s takes related to the chapter titles, but nothing is derived from the book here. If you find the posts challenging in and of themselves, please feel free! But the Mary {heart} and Martha {cleaning} challenges are not shared here.
The book is only $2.50 as a PDF download if you use coupon code: Homemaker. It’s well worth it. :)

How are we supposed to share photos if we can’t share the challenges? Wouldn’t the pics give it away?

    • Christin says:

The goal is to share one post per week – people would be hard pressed figuring out all the challenges that way. ;)
What we’re talking about is people listing all of the challenges on their blog. We want to keep the majority of the material “hidden” to respect the copyrights of the author. So just use discretion. :)

I morph into this reality far too easily and too often. It’s hard because wrong motives are so very, very sneaky. Like you, I function better when my house is clean. And I, certainly, do not want someone to question what I do all day! Oh, how my pride can really mess up the home I long to create!

Great post, Christin. Glad to know I’m not alone!

  4. I am eager to get started but don’t have a blog and don’t know how to start one and don’t know how to make sure I am signed up for giveaways….

    • Christin says:

      Hi Suz,
No worries. You do not need a blog, you can simply follow along and utilize the comments. The giveaways will take place right here on Homemakers Challenge and only require that you leave a comment. Our first giveaway is tomorrow, so be sure to stop by and see what it is so you can enter. All the details will be laid out for you. :)

I love that video, it makes me laugh and cry every time I watch it. I can’t believe she got that all in one song. I was a teacher for Kindergarten for 12 years and I found myself saying those things and now I’m a mom and I’m just starting with those things. So excited about cleaning my home.

  6. Momstheword says:

I had much the same experience with our homeschooling vs. cleaning. That’s why I put chore training into our homeschool schedule. I also had three toy pick ups a day, and a whole house pickup at 7 pm. This helped my craving for order instead of chaos.

I’m a bit confused as to what I should be reading this week. Is today day one, and tomorrow day two, and Saturday day three, etc? I just want to start off on the right foot and I don’t see a list anywhere of what I should be reading and when. Thanks!

    • Christin says:

Hi Nan! Yes, read Day 1 today. Day 2 tomorrow and take the weekend off! :) Then Monday we begin Day 3. We’ll be posting Mon-Fri for each day you are supposed to read/do. :)

  7. Brooke Breck says:

I got so into cleaning today that I forgot to do my hair and had to leave for work with my hair not done. Love it!

  8. Brandy C. says:

Oh I am SO excited that we start today!! Since I didn’t finish last time, I’m gonna stick with the original challenges. Working on my Mary challenge right now.

Are we doing this Monday through Friday again? No weekends?

  9. I woke up at 4:30 this morning and couldn’t go back to sleep so I figured I might as well get my Day 1 Challenge done. It feels great!

  10. Lisa says:

We are on vacation until Saturday, so I will have the postpone the first day until then, but I am reading the book on my Kindle. :-) I am a bit overwhelmed at the thought of unpacking, starting homeschool and cleaning, but I will do my best! :-)

    Many blessings,
    Lisa

  11. Allie Thatsme says:

How do I officially sign up for this challenge? I have the book and did today’s challenge, but I don’t think I’m signed up, haha

  12. Kellyann Walker says:

I was looking forward to this day and then I have been sick for the last 2 days … highly unlike me .. and I have my daughter’s birthday party tomorrow which is now having to ALL be done tomorrow. I will be reading, but I will have to use the weekends to catch up already. :( Not a good start.

    • Christin says:

Kellyann, you don’t worry about catching up. You just jump in where we are on Monday. Do not worry about what you missed, K? This is not about perfection. We have to expect that life will happen…just roll with it! :)

  13. Marleah says:

I’m so excited to have other people to do the challenge with! I started working on 31 Days to Clean on Aug 1, and I have to admit, I’m still only halfway through the challenges, and there’s even a few I didn’t get to in those first 15 days. I LOVE that we’re taking weekends off, and I really hope that it will be extra motivation to know I get to blog about it at the end of the week.

  14. I love Anita Renfroe..she is so awesome! I am a little behind, but going to catch up!!!
