Whole Wheat Pumpkin Pancakes: A Family Tradition

I love family traditions.  I have such sweet memories of going to pumpkin patches, having scavenger hunts, decorating cookies, and many other fun traditions that my parents established for our family.

These family traditions were not anything extravagant.  In fact, they were really quite simple.  However, I still have wonderful memories of these special times we spent together as a family.

Family traditions strengthen relationships.  They bring you closer together and let you connect.  A sense of warmth and unity is felt by all who are involved.

My childhood memories of our family traditions still fill my heart with love and happiness!

When my husband and I were first married, we knew that we wanted to start some of our own family traditions.  The first one that we established was a pumpkin pancake recipe for breakfast every Thanksgiving morning, which I will share below! 

Every year since that first year, we have enjoyed this fun, simple, and relaxing tradition.  It is very casual, and it sets the tone for the rest of our day.  We sit around the breakfast table and enjoy the leisurely, precious time spent with family.  It fosters thanksgiving in our hearts.

This will be our fifth year to enjoy our Thanksgiving tradition, and it has already created lasting memories for us.  Plus, the pancakes are delicious!  It is something that we look forward to every year!

Whole Wheat Pumpkin Pancakes

Yield: 16-18 small pancakes

We enjoy our pumpkin pancakes topped with real maple syrup, fresh whipped cream, and toasted pecans.


  • 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 tsp cloves
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup buttermilk (plus additional to thin batter as needed)
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 TBSP butter or coconut oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (I use my homemade vanilla extract)
  • 2 TBSP sucanat (or raw sugar)


  1. Combine the first eight ingredients (through the nutmeg) in a medium size mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the last six ingredients (the buttermilk through the sucanat).
  3. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir just until combined.  Add additional buttermilk to thin the batter to your desired consistency.
  4. Drop by 1/4 cup portions onto hot griddle.  Cook on each side until golden brown.
  5. Enjoy!
